St. Catherine is the second most populous parish in the island as well as the most rapidly growing. The capital town, Spanish Tow, was once the capital city of Jamaica and was known as St Jago de la Vega. Rich in history, St. Catherine has the finest collection of historical buildings on the island. It is also the birthplace of the first female Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller as well as former 100m world record holder, Asafa Powell. Caymanas Race Track, Jamaica’s most famous race track, is also located in the parish of St Catherine.
